Originally established as an upper-level university, UT-Tyler's mission was expanded in 1997 by the Texas Legislature authorizing it to offer classes for freshman and sophomore students. The journalism program draws a majority of its journalism students from nine junior colleges within a 50-mile radius of Tyler.
